There is more than one kind of dominant.
When someone first steps into this world, they might believe dominance looks one way. Cold. Cruel. A wall of demands with no softness behind it. Some dominants are exactly that and for some subs, that's precisely what they crave. There is no shame in it. But understand that is one dialect of a much older language.
There are dominants who rule through fear. Dominants who rule through ritual. Dominants who lead with structure. Dominants who lead with sensation. Dominants who lead with silence. Some control every breath. Some simply hold the map and walk ahead, trusting the sub to follow. Some are loud because they have to be. Some are quiet because they already know the sub will come.
And if a sub is searching for their place, or a dominant is still in the process of becoming, hear this. It takes time to learn which type someone is, and which type they serve. Most people don't find their fit on the first attempt, or the second. Some spend years performing a version of dominance or submission that was never truly theirs, wondering why the connection always felt hollow. That's not failure. That's the work. The dynamic someone is looking for is a fit, not a fantasy they force themselves into and finding it requires the same patience they'd give any relationship worth having.
Why psychology matters.
I hold a first-class bachelor's degree in sociology and psychology, and a master's in psychology with distinction. I don't mention that to impress. I mention it because it shapes everything about how I dominate and because it matters to understand why.
Sociology taught me people in their context: how power, identity and desire are built between people, shaped by the world around them, never existing in a vacuum. Psychology taught me the person underneath: motivation, attachment, the quiet reasons someone wants what they want and hasn't yet said out loud sometimes hasn't even admitted to themselves.
Why does this matter in a D/S dynamic?
Because submission is not a transaction. It's a psychological exchange, the most intimate one there is. A dominant who doesn't understand the mind is just issuing instructions and hoping they land. A dominant who does understand it is reading their sub the entire time: what they crave, what they fear, what they're ready for, and what they're not yet ready for but soon will be. They hear what the sub doesn't say. They notice the sentence that was typed and deleted. The difference between those two dominants is the difference between a sub being used and a sub being known and anyone who has experienced both knows the gap between them is enormous.
This is why I use the psychological side in findom. Money is never just money. It's a symbol of devotion, of surrender, of trust, of the willingness to let someone else hold weight the sub has been carrying alone. A dominant who understands that builds something lasting. A dominant who doesn't just take and take has no future in it.
What being a dominant means to me.
It was never about demanding. Being a dominant is recognising the sub, the person, the potential, the dreams and hopes hiding underneath the submission. A true dominant doesn't erase the person. They draw them out and build them up. The submission was never the point; it's the doorway to the person standing in it.
Yes, I take control. But dominance is not abuse, and a true dominant doesn't need to control everything they lead. My dominance runs on trust, responsibility, recognition and connection. Being a good dominant isn't asking, "how far can I push them?" and stopping there. It's learning what a sub can handle, what challenges them, what brings out the best in them, when to push and when to bring them back down. That's why I learn my subs. I create rewards that actually mean something to them, not generic praise, but the exact words their mind has been waiting to hear. I create structure that helps them reach their goals, because a dynamic that leaves someone smaller than it found them has failed, no matter how intense it felt. And I take my subs to heights they didn't know they could reach because I took the time to understand the person underneath the submission, and I knew exactly which door to open.
When I have that trust, submission becomes easy. A sub doesn't follow me because I demand it. They follow me because they trust where I'm taking them and that trust is earned, every single time, through attention.
And aftercare is not an afterthought with me. Anyone can take a sub up; the craft is in the landing. I know how to take them to the highest heights, and I know exactly how to bring them back down safely, grounded, and more whole than they were before they knelt.
Leadership. Responsibility. Trust.
I do not diminish my subs. I bring out the person they were always capable of becoming. That is the entire philosophy in a single sentence.
If a sub is searching:
They should find a dominant who actually listens. A dominant who doesn't rush them, every sub deserves attention done properly. A dominant who accepts feedback, because dominance is a consensual role, never a licence to abuse. That is the foundation that protects them. No sub should settle for less, and none should mistake cruelty for strength. The loudest dominant in the room is rarely the most powerful one. The strongest dominants are also the calmest. Watch for the ones who ask questions before they give orders. That's the tell.
If a dominant is still becoming:
Take time. Learn before leading. Authority is not in volume it's in attention. A dominant should study their subs the way they'd study anything they wanted to master. Accept that they'll get things wrong, and that correcting themselves in front of a sub is strength, not weakness. The subs who serve them will trust them more for it, not less.
